I first saw the gunsliger shining on the screen, bright shining on the screen like a star. He always beat the villain, he always got the girl, and then he would sing with his guitar. He'd sing If I'm gonna die, let the bullet take me down. He outdrew every lawmen, was the fastest and the best, and he never had to show you again. Death to him was nothing, just something that would come. The question always is when. He'd say If I'm gonna die, let the bullet take me down. We both kept getting older. I saw him less and less. And I wondered where my hero had gone. Maybe down near Bandalier chasing rattlesnakes for fun and screaming at the top of his lungs If I'm gonna die let the bullet take me down! The gunslinger died laying in his bed, laying in his bed late last night. And do you remember? Do you remember what he said? Do you remember what he said late last night? If I'm gonna die, let the bullet take me down. And now I'm out walking in dead man's shoes, in dead man's shoes all alone. And I'm tired of talking so I'm singing the blues. I'll be singing the blues til I get home. And if I'm gonna die, let the bullet take me down.

Come on darling, the door's still open. The lights are off. No one's awake. I won't leave with anything that isn't mine. There's nothing here that I want to take. And we know that it's right, but you tell me it's wrong. So darling, can I play you a song? Now your sisters are asleep up the stairs and your family history hangs on the wall. You kissed me twice in the doorway and you tell me tomorrow you'll call. But the piano's right here and it won't take too long. So darling, can I play you a song? Now your mother, she won't cook all your meals. Oh, and she'll stop cleaning up when you're done. Cause you never think twice about your messes when you think being careless is fun. And I take it to heart when you're turning me on. So darling, can I play you a song? ust let my hands touch the keys. Let me give you an introduction soft and slow. There's plenty of room on this piano bench or would you rather I turn around and go? Cause I've got enough breath to sing through the dawn. So darling, can I play you a song? Now it seems, my fate's been sealed. I'm walking where the streetlights don't burn. But I gotta good pair of boots and I know my way. But there's still a few chords I gotta learn. And tomorrow will come when the sunrise is gone. And maybe next time I will play you a song. Maybe next time I will play you a song.

She's not worried that you can't afford her or about the wires buzzing with orders, or with the trucks kicking dust on the borders. She's just scared that she might die alone. She's not looking for someone to hold her. Or to repeat anything that I told her. She'll keep quiet and keep getting bolder til the love whispers are lost in the stones. The eagles standing guard are turned sideways, perched on the arches by the highway, watching the sunrise across the scenic byway. I know that morning didn't come here for me. You never thought that asking why paid til you were tired of doing things my way. I've never seen you cry babe, so I don't expect a tear for me. All the boys you once believed in are just shadows you take relief in, cold blooded murders in attempts to get even with the hearts you can't know too soon. It feels good when the speakers are blaring, with the hot red lights burning and glaring. It feels good to know there's people caring, but there's magic in an empty room.

The crickets hum in the wheatfields, sky's a hazy red. I been roughin up my hands and I've been dying in my head. Got a fifth of whiskey left to drink and I'm sweatier than hell. Got a few more lifetimes left to dig this deep ol' well. Not sure if I'm bound to find anything of worth, moving limestone, rock and steel, and a thousand tons of earth. Blasting through the graveyards where all our heroes fell. And their stories echo one by one as I dig this deep ol' well. Jesus never loved me, but God is on my side and I touched the razor's edge where Hell and Earth collide. And I've breathed the darkest nighttime when a man becomes a shell. I ain't never going back there. So I dig this deep ol' well. With just a little digging any man can find that choking, smokey blowback that devestates a mind. Someday we may all harmonize like a resonating bell. But til then, I'm gonna break my back and dig this deep ol' well.

We're just two kids living in America, going right for the throat. The thought of hardship fuels our hysteria. We wear our vanity like a coat. The breaking lightning splits our conversation. The silence echoes off the street. Maybe right now is some lukewarm destination. Maybe I'm talking in my sleep. And every heart must eventually come round and every bird must eventually come down. Shake those blues, sweet darling. The streetlight glints off the beer cans in the front lawn. Someone punched a hole in the wicker chair. The summer nighttime begs the rain to move on. You stroke the strands of your blonde hair. And down Neil Avenue the green lights turn to red even though the road is hot and hollow. Your fear of failure keeps your lucid nightmares fed. Well, where are those dreams you're supposed to follow? Every heart must eventually come round and every bird must eventually come down. Shake those blues, sweet darling. Though I've only seen just a few more years, it feels like I've been beaten up for twenty. I'm still deciding if it's my head or heart that steers. As for long nights, well, I've seen plenty. My tired mind wanders off through the hows and whys. Your heart beats with the thunder clapping. Something tells me by the longing in your eyes that something big is gonna happen. And every heart must eventually come round and every bird must eventually come down. Shake those blues, sweet darling. We're just two kids living in America, going right for the throat.

So you say that she haunts your mind every day and there's nowhere to escape. Nowhere to escape. If it's true that my history's torturing you and it seems like I don't have clue, well darling I do. And if I could take it all back, then I would. When I see that hurt look in your eyes any time that you start to cry, I know I did you wrong. But for me, trying to be the best man I can be means my word is my guarantee when I promise you that if I could take it all back, then I would. In a moment my mind was turned upside-down. I couldn't believe the words coming out and mistakes were made on either side. We danced with fire just to save our pride. What's done is done and we're moving on. We've got the whole day ahead and it's only dawn. And I pay for the terrible choices I made knowing that you don't see me the same ever since she came. But you stand, stand proud and stand with your man as faithful as waves on the sand, knowing that when you hold my hand. That if I could take it all back, then I would. Yeah, if I could take it all back, then I would.

The clock is ticking slower, your muse has taken flight, and you can only hope to blame yourself for why you can't sleep at night. A little piece of mind never hurt no one, but you're closing off your heart. That's where you find love. Your wallet's getting thinner, but there's a drink for every smoke. And a good night's when you're hanging out and someone's laughing at your jokes. Though you leave alone you can count on them to whet your destructive appetite. That's where you find love. You blow your mind every chance you get. Every day is boom or bust. And you laugh and rub out your cigarette on the words of those you trust, but they will keep a light on your stormy shore til you're washed up on the stones. That's where you find love. And once you've buried everything you could steal as you went down, someone may come to claim you like you're in the lost and found. And if you're lucky she will give you back what you're willing to give up. That's where you find love.

I somehow made it through the first day. I got to work and I got home with the dishes from the weekend waiting for me, standing in the kitchen all alone. And I wish I held you longer. What was keeping me from trying? I wish I held you longer and maybe I could keep from crying. I could take comfort in my music: eight simple notes so tried and true. And arrange myself a perfect melody, but even that just ain't as beautiful as you. And I wish I held you longer. What was keeping me from trying? I wish I held you longer and maybe I could keep from crying. The last time I looked in your eyes, with those tender tears a-flowing, my destination was laid out for me, but I still don't know where the hell I'm going. And I wish I held you longer. What was keeping me from trying? I wish I held you longer and maybe I could keep from crying.

Gypsy Girl 03:39
We were standing in the shadows of the pouring rain. She asked me for a cigarette and I asked for her name. She said I've met kings and saints all over the world, no matter where I go they call me a gypsy girl. Oh, gypsy girl. She had silver spanish bracelets, a french necklace made of gold. Had eyes that could end a war and a loveliness that can't be sold. She caught me starin and her lips began to curl. I said I never seen nothing like you, you gypsy girl. Oh, gypsy girl. We spent the night together til the dawn broke us apart. She said I'd love to love you boy, but I'd only break your heart. She grabbed tight my hands, looked down in my soul, yeah, I should've seen it coming when I watched that gypsy girl go. Oh, gypsy girl. I never saw her again except in the flashes of my dreams. And I dream about her til my mind comes apart at the seams. She's somewhere, she's free, halfway around the world and I'm locked up with my love for that gypsy girl. Oh, gypsy girl.

Going Now 03:19
I'm thinking that there's something that we missed. A hot blue spark of fever in that kiss. And you're warm in my bed but I'm lost in my head. And I'm thinkin that there's something that we missed. Now, I ain't saying I know right from wrong. I've been stumbling down that tightrope way too long. But who's to say that I'm a liar if you give in to my desire? I ain't saying I know right from wrong. So I'm going and I'm going now. I'm going and I'm going now. I'm wiping up my tracks and I'm never coming back. I'm going and I'm going now. Waking up's the hardest thing to do next to washing up and putting on your shoes when your heart turns to rust and dreams burn to dust. Yeah, waking up's the hardest thing to do. But you gotta keep that gas in the car. Hang in there son, you're gonna be a star! Cause there's always pride in pain when you're carrying your chains. And you gotta keep that gas in the car. So I'm going and I'm going now. I'm going and I'm going now. I'm wiping up my tracks and I'm never coming back. I'm going and I'm going now. I ain't gonna be your whipping boy no more. Thanks, I'll see my way to the door cause I don't see much success now in cleaning up your mess. And I ain't gonna be your whippin boy no more. I gotta better woman, she's waiting up for me. High fidelity and some sobriety. So I'm raising up my glass and you all can kiss my ass. I gotta better woman she's waiting up for me. So I'm going and I'm going now. I'm going and I'm going now. I'm wiping up my tracks and I'm never coming back. I'm going and I'm going now.

You're a lover and fighter, you're a king without a crown, and every bridge you build up, you somehow burn it down. Your mind's getting restless. Your heart starts to roam. You look around your living room and you never feel at home. Your friends call you crazy and never tell you why. Well, maybe they see something of themselves inside your eyes. And if the dawn is breaking before you've gone to sleep, may the road not be ragged and may your lovers never weep. She'll look at you with wonder then try to mold you with her hands. And you know she'll never compromise so you love her as you can. She'll want you to be gentle and then she'll want you to be tough. She'll want you to be everything and sometimes that just ain't enough. Cause everyone needs a martyr to carry all their crimes, but you can't be a hero and a villain all the time. And if the dawn is breaking before you've gone to sleep, may the road not be ragged and may your lovers never weep. So you crash your motorcycle and shoot your shotgun at the rain, smoke a borrowed cigarette and say I won't be back again. Cause heaven don't come easy and hell just ain't that good. Maybe there's another lost soul in New York or Hollywood. And you can sell your possessions. You can change your state of mind. But the hardest things to part with are the things you leave behind. And if the dawn is breaking before you've gone to sleep, may the road not be ragged and may your lovers never weep. May your lovers never weep.
